The logo always takes up 20% of the code's width: easy to notice, while the code keeps enough margin to scan first time.

How to keep your code working for years

  1. Link to a page that won't disappearIf the page is deleted or renamed, the code will open a 404 error. Your home page or another permanent address is the safest choice.
  2. Renew your domainIf your domain registration lapses, anyone can buy it and the code will lead to their site. Turn on auto-renewal with your registrar.
  3. Avoid link shortenersWith bit.ly and “dynamic” QR codes your link lives on someone else's server. Its owner can change it, switch it off or put it behind a paywall. Why QR codes stop working
  4. Test before a print runPrint one copy at the final size and scan it with two or three phones, both iPhone and Android.
  5. Don't print too smallAt least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in). The farther away people scan from, the bigger the code: roughly 1 cm for every 10 cm of distance.
  6. Keep the white borderThe camera needs the white margin around the code to find it. Don't place the code right against an edge, text or images, and print it on a light background.

QR code as PNG, SVG or JPEG: which format to choose

  1. PNG for websites, social media and documentsSharp edges and a clean white background with no compression artefacts. Works in Word, Google Docs, slides and layouts. For print, choose 2048 px or more.
  2. SVG for print and designA vector file: the code stays crisp on a business card, banner or package of any size. Opens in Illustrator, Figma, CorelDRAW and Inkscape.
  3. JPEG when PNG isn't acceptedFor services and apps that only take JPG. PNG and JPEG files are saved at 300 dpi, so Word and print shops place the code at the right physical size.
  4. Every file is checkedBefore download we decode the finished PNG, SVG or JPEG again. If the code in the file doesn't scan reliably, we won't download it.

QR code FAQ

Will my QR code stop working?

No. The link is stored in the code itself, not on our server, so there is no expiry date and no scan limit. The code works as long as the website it points to works, even if make-qr.net shuts down.

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?

A static code contains your own address. A dynamic code contains a short link owned by the generator service, which redirects to your site. That service can switch the code off after a free trial, start charging a subscription or send people to a different site. make-qr.net only makes static codes.

Can I change the link in a QR code after printing?

No, and that is a safeguard: nobody can swap the address in a printed code. If your link changes, create a new code. To avoid that, point the code to a page whose address will not change.

How do I make a QR code with a logo?

Upload a PNG, JPG or SVG logo in the “Logo in the centre” section. It takes up 20% of the code's width, and the code uses the highest error correction level so it still scans first time. We check that the code reads before you can download it.

How do I download a QR code as PNG or SVG?

Paste your link, choose a size and click PNG, SVG or JPEG under the finished code. PNG suits websites, social media and documents. SVG is a vector format for print and design tools: it scales to any size without losing quality. Every file is checked before download to make sure the code in it scans.

How can I count how many people scanned my QR code?

Turn on “Track visits from this QR code” and fill in the UTM tags. Visits will show up in Google Analytics or any other analytics on your site. We do not count scans ourselves: that would require routing the code through our server, and it would no longer be independent.

What size should I print a QR code?

At least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 × 0.8 in). The farther away people scan from, the bigger the code: roughly 1 cm of width for every 10 cm of distance. For print, download a PNG of 2048 px or more, or an SVG, and do not crop the white border around the code.

Is it free? Do I need a subscription?

Yes, and there is no subscription, now or later. No sign-up, no watermarks and no limits on the number of codes or scans. There is nothing to pay for: the code is made in your browser and doesn't depend on our server. You can use the codes commercially: on packaging, in ads, on menus and business cards.
